NEW DELHI, January 27: The indefinite hunger strike by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) entered its eighth day today with General Secretary Vijoo Krishnan’s failing health becoming a serious cause of concern.
Krishnan has refused to be taken to the hospital and his condition has deteriorated very fast. Medical aid is, however, being given to him on the spot.
The agitation continued today with a small demonstration outside the administration block and students not allowing the rector to enter the building. After negotiations, the students let him go into the building on the condition that some decision is taken on the issue by 4 p.m. tomorrow.Earlier, Vice-Chancellor Asis Datta had met the students and had requested them to end the indefinite stir. He has said that he is open to meeting the students and talking to them. The response to his offer has not been positive.
Meanwhile, the teaching community is also trying to break the impasse. There have been individual efforts and the Teachers’ Association has also asked the students to end the hunger strike. The employees also seem to have softened their stand.
