
NEW DELHI, JULY 31: Delhi Police today claimed to have busted an inter-state gang allegedly involved in robbing train passengers by drugging them, with the arrest of nine persons from North-West Delhi.
The accused, all in the age group of 20 to 30 years and hailing from Beghusarai in Bihar, used to drug unsuspecting passengers by offering them cream-biscuits, tea or laddu’ intoxicated with ativan’ and rob them of their belongings, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) P K Srivastava told newsmen here.
The accused, arrested from Tri Nagar area on July 29, have been remanded to police custody till August 3 by a city court.
On the modus-operandi of the gang, the DCP said its members used to arrive at the railway station a few hours before the starting time of the train and select their probable victims and develop friendship with them.
During conversation they would find out the destination of the passenger and then would tell him that they also intend to go to the same place. They would also board thetrain alongwith the unsuspecting passengers and during the journey they would offer them cream-biscuits, tea or laddu’ lased with ativan’, he said.
As the passengers fall asleep, they rob their belongings, he said.During sustained interrogation, the accused disclosed that the gang was operating on almost every two or three days for the last two years, the DCP said.
As per their disclosure, hundreds of passengers have been drugged by them and their belongings looted, Srivastava said, adding that they have been linked with nine cases so far two in Delhi, five on Ganga-Yamuna Express at Bhiwani, one on Unchahar Express between Ambala and Delhi and two on Amrapali Express starting from Amritsar to Barauni.
Further interrogation is on to find out their involvement in other crimes, to effect recovery of stolen property and to nab their associates, he added.
