In a major security lapse, murder convict in a murder case, fled from the high security Kannur Central Jail on Thursday, a senior jail official said. Deepak (27), who had been undergoing life sentence here since 2003 got out of block-7, where he was lodged along with 50 inmates, by removing the roof tiles early in the morning, Jail Superintendent V P Lasser said.

The prisoner, hailing from Thiruvambadi in Kozhikode district, later tied together pieces of ‘dhoti’ to a log close to the prison wall, placed it over the wall which he climbed up and later got down, Lasser said. He said the inmates who were lodged in the block said they were fast asleep when the incident occurred. Meanwhile, police have begun investigations into the incident.
