With 31 Gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze medals, Chattisgarh accumulated 246 points and won the championship trophy on the concluding day of the 17th All India Forest Games and Sports Meet at the Panjab University grounds on Sunday. Madhya Pradesh was in tow with 202 points. They won 17 gold, 21 silver and 18 bronze medals while Kerala came third with 18 gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze medals and collected 161 points. Chandigarh failed to win any medal.
Earlier, Chattisgarh collected Gold for best march past while the Gold for quiz competition was picked up by Manipur. In the cultural competition, Sikkim won the Gold while Himachal Pradesh secured first position for volleyball. Similarly, Chattisgarh bagged Gold in basketball and Tamil Nadu won the kabaddi title. Tamil Nadu picked up the gold medal for hockey while, in football, Meghalaya emerged as the top team. Jammu and Kashmir picked up the gold medal for winning the cricket final.
A J Minj of Chattisgarh was given the best sportsman award while the best sportsman spirit award was collected by Shiv Shankar of Andhra Pradesh.
In a tough fought match, Haryana defeated Punjab in the final to win the tug-of-war event.
Tikshan Sud, Forest Minister, Punjab, announced cash award of Rs 20, 000 for gold, Rs 10,000 for silver and Rs 5,000 for bronze medal winners from Punjab Forest Departments in individual category and Rs 5,000 for each sportsman .
Department of Forests, West Bengal, will host the 18th All India Forest Games and Sports Meet next year as the Games flag was handed over to them.
