Hashim Amla scored an unbeaten 71 on Saturday to steer South Africa to 110 for two in their second innings of the fourth Test. Only 17.5 overs were bowled at The Oval on day three — all in the morning session — before rain prevented any further play. Resuming the day on 37-1, South Africa lost Neil McKenzie for 29 as they looked to close the 122-run deficit after England were dismissed for 316 on Friday.
England seamer Stuart Broad claimed the only South African wicket to fall when McKenzie dragged a straight delivery onto his stumps after adding 82 for the second wicket with Amla.
Amla took full advantage of a wayward England attack hammering 14 boundaries in his 86-ball innings. Jacques Kallis will return to the crease on day four along with Amla.
England wicket-keeper Tim Ambrose’s place in the test squad is under threat after failing to make a significant contribution with the bat this series.
Brief scores: South Africa 194 and 110/2 (H Amla batting 71, J Kallis batting 2) vs England 316
