Sunita Ahuja attributed her glowing skin to being extremely particular about waking up early every day and maintaining a mindful routine, and also credited her daughter, Tina Ahuja, for introducing her to a life-changing habit. “Mujhe meri beti ne sikhaaya hai. Mummy, aap amrit vela shuru karo. Main jhooth nahi bol rahi hun. Main Tina ke muhn se hamesha sunnti thi ki amrit vela karna chahiye. 6 se pehle aap pooja paath, jaap, meditation jo bhi karo, uska asar aapke shakal par aata hai. Yeh baat maine Tina se seekha. Maine 2-3 saal pehle start kiya. Aisa nahi ki main alarm laga kar uth thi hun…main apne aap uth jaati hun. Then I get ready and sit for my jaap for one hour (I learnt it from my daughter Tina. Amrit vela or pre-dawn hours help your health, skin. I started doing this 2-3 years ago. I wake up without an alarm and get ready and sit for my morning prayers for one hour),” Sunita, who is married to actor Govinda, told Paras Chhabra on his show Abraa Kaa Dabra Show on YouTube.

Next on the routine is some exercise. “At exactly 5.30 am, I get up and go for a walk for one hour. Do yoga. And after that, I come back, drink my coffee. This is my routine. This is what I like doing,” the 57-year-old added.

Rooted in ancient Indian and Sikh philosophy, Amrit Vela is considered the most peaceful and spiritually charged time of day, ideal for meditation, reflection, and self-care, said dietitian Garima Goyal, who added that beyond its spiritual importance, waking up before sunrise aligns beautifully with modern wellness science, particularly for skin health and hormonal balance.

Rising early allows the body to sync with its natural circadian rhythm, ensuring that skin cells regenerate efficiently and the body detoxifies effectively overnight, said Goyal. “When you wake before sunrise, cortisol levels are better regulated, reducing inflammation and stress-related breakouts. The quiet of the early morning also helps calm the mind, lowering stress hormones that can accelerate skin ageing. This balance translates into a visibly fresher and more radiant complexion,” said Goyal.

Moreover, such a morning routine provides the luxury of time to hydrate properly, engage in gentle movement or yoga, and follow a thorough skincare routine without rush. “This not only improves blood circulation but also enhances lymphatic drainage, helping to reduce puffiness and give the face a natural glow,” shared Goyal.

From a nutrition perspective, waking early supports better meal timing and digestion. “When the first meal of the day, be it breakfast or a light fruit-based smoothie, is consumed mindfully rather than hurriedly, nutrient absorption improves. This ensures the body receives an optimal supply of antioxidants, vitamins, and proteins, which are essential for collagen synthesis and skin repair. Combined with proper hydration in the early hours, this practice flushes toxins and promotes a healthy gut, which is often the key to clear, luminous skin,” mentioned Goyal.

According to Goyal, starting the day with silence, meditation, or gratitude cultivates a sense of calm and purpose that reflects outwardly.

“Emotional balance and self-discipline often mirror physical vitality; when the mind feels centred, the body functions harmoniously, and the skin radiates that inner equilibrium. Additionally, sunlight exposure during the early morning provides natural vitamin D without harsh UV damage, further improving mood and supporting healthy skin tone,” said Goyal.

However, while adopting this routine, adequate sleep remains crucial. The goal is not to wake up early at the expense of rest, but to realign the body’s rhythm so that sleep is both sufficient and restorative.
