Every year, World Snorkelling Day is observed on June 30. It is an opportunity to embrace the beauty of snorkelling and create awareness about ocean preservation.

Snorkelling is an activity that involves the practice of swimming through the water wearing a diving mask shaped like a breathing tube called a snorkel, along with swimfins. It remains a popular activity for tourists in tropical destinations who wish to see aquatic life from up close. Snorkelling is also done by scuba divers in underwater sports and as a part of water-based search and rescue operations.

History

The origins of snorkels are obscure, but it is likely that they are older than we think. In “Parts of Animals,” Aristotle mentions the use of “instruments for respiration” by divers, resembling an elephant’s trunk. Similarly, evidence suggests that sea sponge farmers in Crete may have used hollowed-out reeds to submerge and retrieve natural sponhes for trade and commerce — approximately 5,000 years ago. And even acclaimed artist Leonardo da Vinci is believed to have drawn designs of a similar-looking underwater breathing device.

In 1922, Jacques O’Marchal introduced the concept of using a swimmer’s breathing tube and mask for the first time on the beach of La Croix-Valmer, and later displayed them at the International Nautical Show in 1931. Around the same time, Barney B. Garden submitted the first patent application for a swimming respiration tube on December 9, 1929. Following that, Joseph L. Belcher filed a patent application for a similar device on July 30, 1932 — making him the second person to do so.

Despite being the second to file the patent, it is on Belcher’s date that World Snorkelling Day is now observed. In the years after, numerous patent application for similar devices were filed worldwide.

The annual celebratory day recognises the intrinsic bond between people and marine life while exemplifying the beauty of our seas. The day promotes the love of snorkelling — encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to undertake the activity and develop a greater sense of understanding of marine biodiversity while exploring the oceans.

On this day, one can explore the marine fauna by visiting your closest resort that offers snorkelling. People can also opt for underwater sporting activities in a sufficient-sized pool along with their family and friends. And if you love fishing, you can partake in spearfishing — typically done in groups using spearguns — and don’t target endangered species.
