Winter is coming! And with it, the season brings cold and windy air that can leave your skin feeling parched like a dry well. So, what can we do to maintain healthy, vibrant skin during this chilly season?
But before answering that, let’s understand how winters can impact our skin. According to Dr Asmita Dhekhne Chebbi, dermatologist & cosmetologist, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangalore, winter can have both positive and negative effects on the skin.
“Cold and less humid weather can cause skin dryness, flakiness, and irritation. The decrease in temperature and humidity can cause the skin to lose hydration, resulting in increased sensitivity. Furthermore, exposure to strong winds and changing temperatures can cause chapped or windburned skin,” she said.
Similarly, Dr Gitika Sanodia Biyani, dermatologist, cosmetologist & trichologist at Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital, Powai, Mumbai warned that winter is a time of the year when certain allergens like dust mites, mold, and pollen, may be more prominent, which could trigger skin allergic reactions or sensitivities in the skin.
On the positive side, the lower intensity of the sun in winters can be less damaging to the skin, reducing the risk of sunburn and sun damage.
Use a rich, hydrating moisturiser to combat dryness and maintain the skin's moisture barrier.
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to protect the skin from UV rays, which can still be damaging in less intense winter sun.
Gently exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and encourage cell turnover. Use a mild exfoliant once every 7-10 days. Make sure to not over-exfoliate.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to combat dryness and maintain healthy skin from the inside out.
Use a good-quality lip balm to keep your lips hydrated and prevent chapping.
Protect your skin from harsh winds and temperature fluctuations by dressing in layers and covering up.
Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils, so opt for lukewarm showers to prevent excessive dryness.
Choose a mild, hydrating cleanser to avoid over-drying the skin.
Consider using products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and antioxidants to support the skin's health.
Installing a humidifier in your home can add moisture to the air and help prevent dry conditions.
Remember that every individual has different skin, so pay attention to how your skin reacts to various products and adjust your skincare routine accordingly. If you have specific skin issues or conditions, consult a dermatologist for specialised guidance.
