A very important part of all Indian weddings is the ‘haldi’ ceremony where close friends and relatives come together to apply haldi (turmeric) paste on the bride and groom’s face and body. As a kid, you must have wondered how and why this tradition came to be. Pandit Jagannath Guruji, a renowned celebrity astrologer, explained the meaning behind this tradition.
The importance of haldi in Indian culture cannot be overstated, it has great applications in the Ayurveda and is considered extremely auspicious in the Hindu culture. Combining these qualities, we find it to play a very significant role in Indian weddings.
“Hindu traditions consider turmeric’s deep yellow color holy and fortunate. It brings tranquility and prosperity into the couple’s wedded life.” said Pandit Jagannath. Haldi is also believed to ward off evil energies. The concept of the evil eye is highly valued in Indian Vedas and customs, and it is thought that Haldi paste protects the bride and groom from any negative omens before the wedding day.
Turmeric is celebrated as a beauty aid that keeps the skin clear while enhancing its luster and glow. Every bride and groom desire to look their finest, and turmeric helps achieve that. There is further scientific reasoning behind this practice. The paste acts as a stress reliever. Curcumin, the main active ingredient in turmeric, is thought to act as an antidepressant and reduce pre-wedding anxiety.
