Life skills are a must. So, when we came across a hack that promised to help in case someone accidentally fell into a swimming pool with no immediate help in sight, we were all eyes and ears. According to coach Michael Alan Koleber, one must not panic, and first open their shoes. “Then let’s get the pants off. Hold your breath with your face above water. Now, knot the pant legs in such a way that there are air bubbles and water in them. Mount it on your neck like a swimming float,” said the coach.
He further explained that it’s essential to remove one’s clothing as it becomes saturated with water, making it heavy and increasing one’s risk of drowning. Moreover, removing the outer clothing helps one move more freely. While calling for help is essential, it’s best always to be apprised regarding basic safety measures, especially near water sources. Finally, aim to reach the pool’s edge and pull yourself out of the water as help arrives.
Swimming coach Shubhankar Thosar noted indeed, clothes add to the weight of an individual in a pool, and it becomes challenging to float with your clothes on. “This can be a useful method if a person knows a little about floating in water and is indeed calm,” said Thosar.
However, he underlined that most pools have safety procedures and people to take care of in case of such mishaps.
“Swimming is a life skill and should be learned by all. A person who knows swimming can manage … it will be a bit difficult, but he/she can manage,” said Thosar.
