Pregnancy causes a host of distinct changes in a woman’s life. While it definitely brings across joyous moments, it is often accompanied by a few issues that can cause inconvenience and a feeling of discomfort for a mother-to-be. One such common occurrence is belly itching. While some mothers resort to scratching the growing belly, experts urge caution and swear by certain effective tips to provide relief.
Why does it occur?
Dr Pratima Thamke, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar said that belly itching occurs often due to stretching skin and hormonal changes. Content creator Yashasvi Rathi, too, took to Instagram to share a video of her growing belly and said that belly itching during pregnancy is a common symptom caused by the stretching of the skin as the baby grows and hormonal changes occur.
“It can be uncomfortable, but usually not a cause for concern. To relieve itching, you can try using moisturisers, wearing loose-fitting clothing, avoiding hot showers, and using cool compresses. If the itching is severe or accompanied by a rash, it’s important to consult your healthcare provider,” said Rathi.
What can help?
Dr Thamke shared a few effective tips
*Maintaining good hydration helps keep your skin moisturised. “Apply a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturiser regularly to prevent dryness. Wearing loose, breathable clothing made from natural fibres can reduce friction and irritation,” said Dr Thamke.
*Avoid hot showers or baths, as they can dry out your skin. “Use mild, unscented soap and pat your skin dry gently after bathing. Over-the-counter corticosteroid creams can help alleviate itching, but consult your doctor before using any medication during pregnancy,” said Dr Thamke.
*Be cautious with your diet, as certain foods might exacerbate itching. “A balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients supports skin health. Consult your healthcare provider for dietary recommendations,” said Dr Thamke.
According to Dr Thamke, if itching becomes severe, persists, or is accompanied by other symptoms like rash, it is essential to consult the doctor. “These could be signs of a more serious condition like cholestasis of pregnancy,” said Dr Thamke.
What to consider?
Experts urge that since each pregnancy is unique, it’s important to communicate any concerns with the healthcare provider to ensure the best care for the mother and the baby.
