Who doesn’t love to give their body extra TLC to make it smooth, supple, and squeaky clean? While washing and moisturising are common practices followed by most people, others introduce one additional but optional step to their routine — dry brushing. Dry brushing your body is a simple and enjoyable ritual that can leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated. It is a self-care technique that involves using a brush with stiff bristles to massage and exfoliate the skin, without water or any other substance.

A proponent of the same is actor Sonnalli Seygall who shared that dry brushing is “one thing in my everyday skincare routine that I never miss”. “Benefits are so many and while different studies show different things, I have personally benefited a lot from it,” she said, sharing the benefits.

Here are some benefits of dry brushing, as shared by Sonnalli.

Exfoliation: Dry brushing can help remove dead skin cells, leaving the skin looking and feeling smoother, she said.

Lymphatic drainage: Sonnalli explained that the lymphatic system is responsible for removing waste and toxins from the body. “Dry brushing helps to stimulate lymphatic drainage, which can improve immune function and overall health.”

Circulation: Dry brushing is also believed to improve circulation, leading to healthier and more radiant skin.

Cellulite reduction: Sonnalli said that dry brushing can reduce the appearance of cellulite “by increasing blood flow and lymphatic draining, thus making your skin appear tighter”.

Talking about dry brushing, Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics said that it is the process of exfoliating and removing dead skin cells from the skin by brushing it with a bristle brush. “Some claim it can help improve circulation, lymph drainage, and the immune system. Dry brushing may help physically exfoliate the skin, making it seem smoother. It is possible that it will have further advantages. Brushing upward, towards the heart, is recommended in several recommendations,” she said.

The dermatologist shared that following dry brushing, a shower or bath can be taken. “The goal is to exfoliate the skin and massage it. People can dry brush their entire body or only their face. Because the face is more delicate, it is recommended to use a gentler brush for the latter,” she said.

Apart from the benefit of exfoliation, the expert said that some people also love the sensation of dry brushing as it helps people feel refreshed or alert before going into the shower. “It may motivate people to prioritise self-care.”

Here are some tips, as shared by Dr Kapoor.

*Dry brushing can be soft or severe, depending on the brush used and the amount of pressure used. As such, it’s a good idea to try out a few various brushes until you discover one that feels perfect.

*Once someone obtains their brush, they can begin by dry brushing once a week. If they like, they can gradually increase to a couple of times each week.
