Let's discuss whether Himalayan sea salt helps alleviate migraine headaches.

The body needs sodium to carry out its basic metabolic functions. But can sodium, especially Himalayan sea salt get rid of headaches, and even migraine, like Sage Workinger, co-founder of 10X Health said in a podcast with Wayne Lewis?

“Sounds really crazy but if you sprinkle pink Himalayan sea salt into your water, it doesn’t make it too salty, the salt helps get the water into your tissues, so it hydrates you better. A lot of times, people suffer from migraines because they are severely dehydrated. Have 1 or two glasses with salt,” she said.

According to Workinger, the consumption of Himalayan pink salt is believed to replenish lost sodium and other electrolytes, aiding in the proper absorption of water by brain cells.

Let’s discuss whether this salt helps alleviate migraine headaches.

What causes headaches and migraine?

Dehydration is a key factor contributing to headaches. During episodes of headache or migraine, loss of appetite is common, and vomiting exacerbates the situation. “This is because the body becomes deficient in both fluid and electrolytes, with low sodium content in the blood contributing to dehydration. Sodium, being an essential electrolyte, is vital for retaining water in our cells. Additionally, electrolytes like chloride, potassium, and magnesium are essential for proper hydration, as chloride ions, in conjunction with sodium ions, create a voltage that contributes to the optimal functioning of the sodium and potassium pump,” said Shivani Bajwa, CEO and founder, YogaSutra Holistic Living.

When dehydration is the case, water with electrolytes — sodium, potassium, and magnesium can help relieve the headache. “Sodium alone can bring down the headache significantly sometimes, which is why saltwater helps. But getting all the electrolytes in is even more effective. You can opt for a good electrolyte powder or ORS solution. Or get the electrolytes individually,” said functional nutritionist Mugdha Pradhan, CEO and Founder, iThrive.

Is salt effective?

Bajwa mentioned that it’s essential to recognise that while some individuals may find relief through this approach, its efficacy can vary, and it might not work for everyone. “In cases of chronic or severe headaches, consulting a healthcare professional is paramount for a proper diagnosis and tailored treatment. Given the diverse causes of headaches, the approach to relief should be guided by the underlying issue.”

Pradhan further mentioned that Himalayan pink salt or sea salt is a good sodium supplement, while a magnesium supplement such as magnesium glycinate is preferable as it is difficult to obtain sufficient amounts through diet alone. “Potassium overdose is lethal making supplementation risky. You can opt for potassium-rich foods like avocados, coconut water, bananas, and pistachios instead.”

What to keep in mind?

Experts urge that addressing sodium-potassium imbalance alone, such as through the consumption of sea salt, may not entirely eliminate headaches. “Other root causes, including gut issues, liver inflammation, and deficiencies in trace minerals, should be considered. Additionally, addressing adrenal fatigue, maintaining circadian rhythms, improving sleep patterns, and managing stress are crucial aspects of headache management,” Bajwa explained.
