Body odour: Is dabbing salt on the underarms a sure shot solution?

One should refrain from opting for any home remedies that can worsen the skin’s texture and cause dryness or even eczema, cautioned Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Shareefa's Skin Care Clinic

The world of skin and body care is flooded with numerous dos and don’ts. So, it is only natural that the same applies to remedies available for smelly underarms, especially in the summer. But if Dr Aparajita Lamba, a dermatologist, is to go by, dabbing saltwater/salt on the underarms twice a day can help you eliminate the odour — a hack she vouches for.

But does it truly work?

Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Shareefa’s Skin Care Clinic cautioned that while dabbing salt water to remove underarm odour may seem like an easy solution, it may not work for all skin types. “Even though salt has antibacterial properties that help get rid of that unpleasant body odour by killing some of the bacteria, it may not be suitable for everyone and may cause allergic reactions such as a burning sensation, redness, and itchiness. Everyone has a different skin type and what suits one may not work for another,” said Dr Chause.

One should refrain from opting for any home remedies that can worsen the skin’s texture and cause dryness or even eczema, she warned.

“Rubbing salt or applying salt water will not be able to eliminate the underarm odour that arises due to the mixture of sweat and bacteria. It’s the need of the hour to follow good hygiene practices such as regular showering, using chemical-free products prescribed by the dermatologist, and underarm roll-on with antiperspirant properties,” mentioned Dr Chause.

Exercise caution while using such products given everyone’s skin sensitivities are different. “It is better to consult an expert before trying any home remedies. Don’t just follow any trend without adequate knowledge. Understand the cons of everything first and make informed decisions. Don’t be ignorant and follow the instructions given by your trusted expert,” urged Dr Chause.
