Have pimples become your BFFs post the past week of festivities? Thanks to all the oil-rich food and alcohol you guzzled at Diwali parties, not only does your wallet have a crater-sized hole but your face does too. In multiples, we’re guessing.

Dr Bhavana Nukala, consultant dermatologist, CARE Hospitals, tells indianexpress.com in an interaction that diets high in saturated and trans fats may contribute to acne. “These fats can increase sebum production in the skin, leading to clogged pores and acne. Foods like fried foods, processed snacks, and certain cooking oils may fall into this category.”

She added that alcohol may have inflammatory effects on the skin, exacerbating existing acne or causing new breakouts. Additionally, alcohol is also a diuretic, which can bring about excessive dehydration of your skin, if consumed at high levels.

Though, there is no specific quantity that universally defines “too much” alcohol, maintaining a balanced diet and moderating alcohol intake can contribute to overall skin health, said Dr Nakula.

Here’s how to manage and prevent any more acne

Cleanse your skin: Use a mild cleanser to remove excess oil, dirt, and makeup. Avoid harsh scrubbing, as it can irritate the skin and worsen acne.

Moisturise well: Even if you have oily skin, moisturising is essential to maintain skin hydration.

Use non-comedogenic products: Select skincare and makeup products labeled as non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t clog pores.

Healthy diet: Consume a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Include foods high in omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., fish, flaxseeds) as they have anti-inflammatory properties to combat the inflammation from alcohol.

Hydration: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin and body well-hydrated.

Limit alcohol and oil-rich foods: Moderation is key. Reduce alcohol intake and limit the consumption of foods high in saturated and trans fats.

Avoid touching your face: Touching your face can transfer bacteria and irritate the skin, leading to breakouts.

If acne persists, seek professional advice. Dermatologists can recommend specific treatments such as topical or oral medications, chemical peels, or laser therapy. Dr Nakula noted that individual responses to dietary changes and skincare routines can vary.
