Most of our childhoods are incomplete without memories of coming back from school and sititng in front of the television to catch re-runs of Pokemon, as Ash and Pikachu fight monsters and save the day. For a brief period of time, Pikachu made a comeback with Pokemon GO gripping kids and young adults in a frenzy before the pandemic crushed the hype.

Following Anita Dongre and Mattel’s collaboration to dress up Barbie in a stunning traditional Rajasthan-inspired outfit for Diwali, netizens are in for a treat as another one of their childhood favourite slips into festive mode.

At a special event in Mumbai, Pokémon GO introduced a desi look for Pikachu, keeping India’s festive season in mind. As part of their ‘Pokémon Festivities’ campaign, designed to blend Pokémon’s iconic charm with India’s rich cultural heritage, the organisers unveiled life-size versions of a male and female Pikachu in a kurta and a sari.

According to the Pokémon GO website, Pikachu’s new look will be integrated in India’s raids of game from November 1 to 4, 2024 as part of a collaboration with Pokémon GO co-developer Niantic, and this will give trainers the chance to catch Pikachu in its traditional attire. The festive outfits feature a pink five yard with golden borders and a matching blouse, along with a bright blue kurta and a baby pink waistcoat –– both fabrics emblazoned with Mago Berry prints, and the classic Poké Ball motif.

Bollywood celebrity couple Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza were announced as the brand ambassadors for Pokémon GO, who were present at the event and were seen interacting with the Pikachu figurines.

The website also mentions that Pikachu will be participating in various festive initiatives, including special events in Pokémon GO and the launch of a limited-edition Pokémon Festivities Gift Box. The promotion will be available until October 31, 2024, across cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, with home delivery.

A collection of animated ‘Pokémon Festivities’ GIF stickers featuring Pikachu in its new avatar will also be available on social media platforms until January 15, 2025, stated the platform.
