Tip tip barsa paani may be all the rage but when paani ne aag lagayi straight to your skin, it all starts going downhill. Monsoon may have barely begun but the grease on our faces because of it makes it feel like it’s been going on for a hundred years, especially when you add all that chai and pakodas into the mix.

According to dermatologist Dr Aanchal Panth, because of “the increased humidity in the air, many people complain that their skin type changes in monsoon from normal or combination to oily.”

When those gates of hell open, they’ll bring with them gnarly demons in the form of acne and blackheads.

Dr Stuti Khare Shukla, dermatologist and founder of Elements of Aesthetics, says that the humidity will also contribute to the build-up of bacteria, sweat, dust and pollutants on your skin, which can, in turn, lead to skin infections. So, how do you save yourself from them?

Dr Panth suggests switching to gel-based and non-comedogenic sunscreens during monsoon as they will keep your skin free of oils and won’t occlude on your skin making it feel too sticky.

If you’re someone who doesn’t like going barefaced, you can keep to makeup minimal to avoid oily skin. ” Use light, non-comedogenic, water-based cosmetics, and oil-free foundations that don’t add extra oil or clog pores,” she adds.

Carry a blotting paper/tissue

According to Dr Panth, you must always carry a blotting paper or a tissue on your person at all times, during the monsoon. Additionally, refrain from touching your face too frequently as that will transfer germs onto your skin.

Exfoliate properly

It is important to exfoliate your skin properly. But remember to not scrub too hard as that may also damage the epidermis (the upper layer), ripping off the natural oils of your skin.

According to Dr Shukla, you should wash your face twice with an oil fighting cleanser, “especially if your lifestyle keeps you out in the humidity and pollution.”

Hydrate your skin lightly

Yes, we might seem crazy for suggesting you add on hydration to a skin that is already leaning towards oily but believe us, when we tell you, you must never skip on the hydration.

If you miss applying moisturiser, your oil glands may think you forgot them and start producing even more sebum than usual and your skin will be oilier. Dr Panth also recommends not layering too many products.
