Neetu Kapoor defies age and how. The 66-year-old recently spoke about her no-fuss skincare routine in a conversation with Kusha Kapila, Athiya Shetty, and Shweta Bachchan Nanda on Mira Kapoor‘s podcast ‘Skin and Within.’ “I am into skincare. I take care of my skin. But I am not obsessed with it. It’s just cleansing and moisturising; I don’t do toners and stuff like that. What I follow is retinol. For years, I have been using retinol once a week. It helps more than a facial. I have never used an SPF. I have never used oil,” said Neetu, to which both Athiya and Kusha said in unison, “You are just blessed.”
Treating Neetu’s case as “exceptional”, Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, Mumbai commented that applying SPF is one of the best things you can do to your skin. “Ultraviolet rays can significantly harm your skin while resulting in several health complications. People not applying sunscreen are at higher risk of developing skin cancer. UV radiation from the sun can permanently damage the DNA of the cells in your skin. It can further lead to a mutation that can lead to conditions like melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma,” said Dr Rinky.
Without sunscreen, there’s a higher chance of you experiencing sunburn, stressed Dr Rinky. “This can cause severe pain, redness, inflammation, and peelings of the skin layer. There are no alternative options or cosmetic products that can be as beneficial as sunscreen,” said Dr Rinky.
If you have never applied SPF before, Dr Rinky recommends consulting a dermatologist. “Your dermatologist may suggest an optimal sunscreen with SPF 30 or more that suits your skin type, texture, and conditions,” said Dr Rinky.
For effective results, apply a generous layer of sunscreen on your face, hands, neck, and behind the ear. Dr Rinky said that one should not ditch or skip sunscreen even on cloudy days or when staying indoors.
“That’s because UV rays can easily penetrate through windows when you stay indoors. Make sure you reapply sunscreen after 3 to 4 hours, especially after swimming or sweating excessively. Along with sunscreen, proactive steps like wearing appropriate clothes and shades can help protect your skin from harmful UV rays,” said Dr Rinky.
