Menopause can happen anywhere between 40 to 50 years old. It is defined as a period where menstruation stops completely. A lot of changes happen during menopause, among them is deteriorating skin health, which is very common. Dr Rashmi Shetty, Global Dermatology Expert, Founder of Ra Skin & Aesthetics said, “Menopause leads to decreased production of oestrogen and progesterone which makes the skin dry, increases redness on face and exacerbation of conditions like acne and rosacea, melasma, and sagging of skin.”

At the same time, changing hormone levels can cause acne. Adding to this, as per the American Academy of Dermatology, there is a significant drop in collagen, which is responsible for the skin’s structure. A rapid loss of collagen can lead to signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles and sagging cheeks.

While menopause is inevitable, your skin can be maintained and improved using various skin care ingredients, a healthy diet and lifestyle. Here are some steps you can take for youthful and firmer looking skin, as per the expert:

Hydration

This is one of the most important steps for healthy menopausal skin. Your face and body may feel drier than usual; thus, it is essential to use a moisturiser with hyaluronic, which can aid in drawing moisture to the skin. Similarly, ceramide moisturisers can help prevent moisture escaping and balance the skin’s moisture content. Additionally, it is helpful to consume lots of water and hydrating foods such as cucumber, tomatoes, watermelons and apples to protect the skin barrier.

Cleanse daily

Cleansing is the first step to any good skin care routine. It is extremely important during menopause as hormonal changes lead to dry skin, thus, to combat this issue, one needs to wash their face with a gentle, soap-free cleanser. This will prevent breakouts and help unclog the pores.

Use retinol

Retinol is a derivation of vitamin A in its purest form. It helps altering the behaviour of aged cells, so that they act in a more youthful way and regenerate at a faster rate. This helps in rejuvenating the skin, evening out skin tone, decreasing acne and boosting collagen synthesis. It is also a powerful antioxidant, which prevents free radical damage and oxidative stress. If you’re using it for the first time, gradually introduce it into your regime by applying it 2-3 times a week at night.

Wear SPF

Applying sunscreen daily becomes especially important for menopausal individuals as heightened risk of skin cancer. Additionally, since one of the main factors of skin ageing is sun exposure, it is essential to regularly wear SPF–even if it’s cloudy. It is recommended to use an SPF of 30 or higher every morning.

Concluding Dr Shetty said, “One must also consider the intake of certain supplements like vitamin D3, calcium, primrose oil and multivitamins which ease the process of menopause.”
