If you have a green thumb and are fond of growing your own fruits and vegetables, we are sure you will love what we have in store for you today. No, we aren’t talking about having your own tomato, potato, aloe vera, or basil plant– we’ve taken it a notch higher and will tell you how you can grow blackberries at home. That was unexpected, wasn’t it? Armen Adamjan, a content creator, recently shared a video on how to grow your own blackberries, known to be a great source of vitamins, minerals, fibre, and antioxidants.
But before proceeding, let’s first understand the many health benefits of blackberries.
Like every other berry, blackberry — which is low in calories, carbs, and fat — helps in the prevention of many chronic and inflammatory diseases, said registered dietitian Garima Goyal.
“Blackberries are a rich source of vitamin C that produces an excellent antioxidant effect in the body, boosts immunity, and keeps diseases at bay. Apart from that, they also play a vital role in wound healing, collagen formation, and better iron absorption,” Goyal told indianexpress.com.
How to grow blackberries at home?
Here’s Adamjan’s step-by-step guide
*Grab a blackberry. Put it in a blender, add a bit of water, and blend. Strain the water to get the seeds.
*”Now, on a foil, place a wet paper towel. Put the seeds over it with some fresh soil sprinkled on top. Fold the foil. Keep it in the refrigerator. After some time, the seeds would have sprouted,” said Adamjan.
*Plant the sprouted seeds in a pot with some fresh soil. Water is generously. Put a bag or bottle over it for humidity. Soon, you will see a blackberry seedling growing.
*When it grows six inches long, move it to a bigger pot or in your garden.
While black berry is grown in different continents, India has its own kind with same benefits. Kala jamun, generally relished during the summers has all the goodness of berries and is also produced and grown locally, mentioned Goyal.
“Blackberries have exceptional nutrient composition and you can try growing them in your back garden. But if not possible, don’t worry as India also has very many other berry varieties with numerous nutritional benefits too,” said Goyal.
