Miriam Margolyes, known for her iconic film and TV roles, recently opened up about her experience with gender identity and body image for the latest pride issue of British Vogue. Marking her first-ever appearance on the cover of the acclaimed fashion magazine at the age of 82, the actor posed nude with Belgian buns hiding her breasts.
In the accompanying interview, Margolyes — best known for essaying the role of Professor Pomona Sprout in the Harry Potter film series — recounted the challenges she faced as she came out as a lesbian in 1966 when homosexuality was still illegal. She also opened up about living through the HIV crisis in the 1980s during which she lost 34 friends.
“I never had any shame about being gay or anything really. I knew it wasn’t criminal because it was me. I couldn’t be a criminal,” she said, adding that her Jewish parents were less accepting of her sexuality. “It hurt them and I don’t want to hurt people.”
Further in the interview, Margolyes said that gay people have the luck to be able to fashion the relationship they want. “It’s much more flexible for us. I think we have more freedom than [straight people] do.” While she loves to see the “uninhibited young enjoying themselves”, the actor has never been too fond of Pride marches.
“I actually find lesbians a bit on the boring side, because they’re a bit heavy-handed about it all,” she said. “I think gay people are very lucky because we are not conventional, we are a group slightly apart. It gives us an edge. We’re good artists, we’re good musicians. And I like being gay. I wouldn’t want to be straight for anything.”
Revealing her body image issues, Margolyes said that she has learned to be kinder to herself, but her appearance is still a source of discomfort for her. “I like my face. I think my face is kind and warm and open and smiley. But I hate my body. I hate big tits [and I have] a drooping belly, little twisted legs. I’m not thrilled with that. But you just make the best of it. You have to. You do the best you can,” she said.
