We knew applying glycerine to the skin could have many benefits, but we had no idea it was as beneficial for the hair. Are you as surprised as us to find that out? Worry not, we will answer all your questions here.
“Applying glycerine to your scalp can be beneficial, especially if you have dry, flaky, or itchy skin. Glycerine is a humectant, which means it attracts moisture from the environment and helps retain it in your skin,” said Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist, and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinic.
It softens the skin and hair, making your scalp feel more comfortable and your hair easier to manage. “This can also help prevent dandruff caused by dry skin,” said Dr Kapoor.
Regular use of glycerine can improve the overall health of your scalp by maintaining its moisture balance, making way for a healthy environment for hair growth, said Dr Kapoor.
According to Dr Kapoor, it is advised to dilute glycerine with water or mix it with your favourite hair oil before applying it to your scalp. “This helps prevent it from being too sticky or heavy. Apply it directly to the scalp and massage gently to ensure even distribution,” said Dr Kapoor.
While glycerine is generally safe, Dr Kapoor suggested doing a patch test to ensure you don’t have an allergic reaction. “Also, avoid using too much glycerine as it can make your scalp and hair feel greasy,” said Dr Kapoor.
Look for products that contain glycerine as an ingredient or opt for pure, vegetable-derived glycerine for the best results.
“Glycerine can be a great addition to your scalp care routine, especially if you struggle with dryness. By incorporating it wisely, you can enjoy a healthier, more hydrated scalp and improved hair quality,” said Dr Kapoor.
