Eid ul Fitr 2023 Date India: Celebrated by the Muslim community all over the globe, Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. It is believed that Prophet Muhammad got the first revelation of the Holy Quran in this month.

Islamic holidays follow the lunar calendar and not the Gregorian calendar. For a whole month, Muslims around the world fast, offer prayers, and practice self-discipline. They do charitable acts like feeding the poor and giving them alms.

The importance of the festival lies in paying respects to Allah for giving one the strength and endurance to observe the month-long fast. Eid ul-Fitr falls on the first day of the month of shawwal, which is the only day in that month when Muslims do not need to fast.

Eid is a joyous occasion wherein families and friends get together to celebrate the day. Upon the sighting of the moon, they wish each other ‘Eid Mubarak’ and exchange hugs and gifts. People wear new clothes and step out.

It is often said that Muslims believe they are commanded by Allah — as also mentioned in the Holy book of the Quran — to continue fasting till the very last day of Ramadan and pay the Zakat al-Fitr before offering the prayers for Eid.

the sighting of the moon decides the date. Islam follows the lunar calendar and relies on the waxing and waning phases of the moon. As Eid approaches, people wish for clear skies, because the sighting of the crescent moon indicates that the festival has officially begun. People then begin to dress up and start the feast.

Muslims wake up early in the morning, chant their salat ul-fajr (daily prayers), take a bath, and wear attar (perfume). It is a custom to eat a hearty breakfast before people head to perform the special congregational prayers. Many Muslims also recite the takbir, which is the declaration of faith, on their way to the prayer ground and take part in zakat al-fitr (charitable contributions).
