For most people, owing to a lack of knowledge about their skin type and its concerns, it can be quite tricky to crack a suitable skincare regime. But often, even skincare enthusiasts may struggle to keep up with issues like acne, blackheads, fine lines, and wrinkles and also the many tools that promise to keep skin woes at bay. As such, when we spotted actor Gauri Pradhan using a dermaroller (which she calls collagen roller) on her face, we decided to seek expert advice on the correct way to use it at home and in clinical settings.
In a video shared on her Instagram page, Gauri Pradhan can be seen rolling the tool on her face — under the eye, lips, neck, cheek, and forehead. “The collagen roller. Used to erase fine lines under the eyes, lips, neck, cheeks, and forehead. Also helps with crow’s feet, 11 lines, and more. Can also be used to plump lips and boost collagen,” she captioned the video.
On being quizzed about its usage by a user asking whether it should be used at night after applying a night serum, she responded, “Yes”. Answering another question about whether it can be used on an active pimple, she responded, “No”.

Is it effective?
Derma roller or micro needling, which is also called collagen induction therapy, has many benefits for the skin, said Dr Vandana Punjabi, consultant dermatologist, and trichologist, practicing in Khar and Nanavati Max Superspeciality Hospital. It helps in improving skin complexion, acne scars, stretch marks, and large pores on the face, she added.
Agreed Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, and said that derma rollers have a number of uses such as improving skin texture, rejuvenation, reduction of fine lines, superficial acne scars, mild pigmentation problems, hair rejuvenation etc. “Not only this, derma rollers allow skin care products to penetrate deeper into the skin and give better results,” Dr Kapoor told indianexpress.com.
At home, micro needling is carried out by a roller or a pen that is generally 0.25 mm or 0.5 mm deep, shared Dr Punjabi. “It may have some benefits in anti-ageing as these help ‘transcutaneous delivery’ of anti-ageing agents but are not deep enough to cause collagen remodelling,” Dr Punjabi continued.
Things to keep in mind
*If the rolling is done too harshly, it can lead to pigmentation and scarring.
*One must remember not to apply retinol serum immediately after using the derma roller as this can irritate the skin.
*The roller should be sanitised before and after use.
*Patients with active acne, warts, eczema, rosacea, and herpes should not use the home roller as this worsens their skin condition.
According to Dr Punjabi, when done in clinical settings, all scientific studies on micro needling have used a depth of “1.5 mm or more which can be done only by a doctor after applying a numbing cream and are carried out at an interval of four weeks”.
Stating that it is a “minimally invasive procedure wherein small holes are created in the epidermis”, Dr Punjabi said, “This produces microchannels that increase skin permeability and simultaneously stimulate growth factor release in the dermis. This helps in collagen remodeling and skin rejuvenation and is a good treatment option for anti-ageing, acne scars, and photodamage.”
