Taking care of your skin is essential not only in the morning and during the day but also at night. While we sleep, our skin goes through a process of repair and rejuvenation. As such, it is during this time that proper skincare routines can have a significant impact. Additionally, nighttime skincare allows for the removal of accumulated dirt, pollutants, and makeup, allowing the skin to breathe and regenerate.
Chhavi Mittal believes in something similar as she follows a simple but dedicated night-time skincare routine. Sharing the same with her followers on Instagram, the 42-year-old wrote, “A good bedtime face cleansing routine is so important for healthy skin in the long run. Here’s what I do to rid my face of products and dirt.”
In an accompanying video, she said, “So I had a very good shoot day today. And now it’s time to take off my makeup. So I thought I should share how I take off my makeup and what ways I protect my skin from the harmful effects of makeup.”
Firstly, Chhavi began by using cleansing wipes. “I use these for my eyelashes, specifically to remove my mascara or anything black that I have used,” she shared, adding that she uses two more such wipes to remove the rest of her makeup, including her base and lipstick.
While using these cleansing wipes, “I go as gently as possible so that I don’t harm my skin. I don’t want to rub it or be harsh with it,” she said.
Next, Chhavi used a soothing cleansing oil. “First, oil cleanses your skin and when you use water, it also lathers like a face wash,” the actor-producer said. Finally, She finished off her bedtime skincare routine with some coconut oil.
According to Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, it is essential to remove makeup before going to bed since it can do significant harm to your skin at night. “When you sleep, your skin renews itself, and wearing makeup prevents this from happening. The skin stops breathing, and tiredness symptoms occur shortly after. Because most makeup contains greasy ingredients, it clogs your pores and contributes to the appearance of other acne and blackhead outbreaks the next day,” she said.
Dr Kapoor added that when makeup residue and the components that make up your makeup are left on your skin for hours during the night, they can create a variety of skin flaws. “That is why applying a makeup remover before bed is essential, followed by moisturising your face to allow your skin to breathe properly,” the dermatologist said.
Agreeing, Dr Rashmi Malik, Principal Consultant, Dermatology, Max Multi Speciality Centre, Panchsheel Park, Delhi said that it is very important to take off make-up at the end of the day as even the best quality make-up products can clog the pores. “Use a gentle cleanser to wipe off the make-up and then apply a good gentle moisturiser. For mature skin, one can also use anti-ageing serums after moisturising like retinol or hyaluronic acid-based serums,” she said.
