Even if you’re not a usual skincare fanatic or an internet buff, you might be aware of the significance moisturising has for your skin. A candle moisturiser, as the name suggests, has been going viral and refers to a moisturiser made out of molten candle wax.

It’s a type of beauty product where a candle melts into a warm, liquid moisturiser, often infused with essential oils and fragrances. You light the candle, allow the wax to melt, and then apply the melted wax as a body oil or lotion.

Are these moisturisers dermatologist-approved?

While hot liquid might feel soothing initially, it doesn’t provide long-lasting hydration, says Dr Rinki Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, Mumbai. Some liquid moisturisers might contain wax that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. “Opt for lukewarm or room-temperature moisturizers specifically designed for skincare”, she says.

These products are formulated to nourish your skin without posing any risks. Hot liquids also are more prone to contamination from bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms, she adds. The sudden temperature change can irritate the skin, leading to redness, inflammation, and discomfort. Burns can lead to scarring, pigmentation issues, and other long-term skin problems.

Moreover, exposing your skin to extreme temperatures can disrupt its natural protective barrier, making it more susceptible to dryness, irritation, and infection.

What are the benefits of moisturisers?

Normal moisturisers are designed to be applied to cool skin. Therefore, they are formulated with specific ingredients to hydrate, protect, and nourish the skin without causing harm.

Hot liquid moisturisers, on the other hand, can be dangerously hot and can often contain ingredients that are unsuitable for direct skin application. Moisturisers help repair the skin’s protective barrier, aiding in faster cell turnover and wound healing. Additionally, well-hydrated skin is less prone to wrinkles and fine lines. Some moisturisers contain ingredients that can soothe inflammation and redness.
