Omega-3 fatty acids play a vital role in maintaining healthy skin. They are a type of polyunsaturated fat that is also essential for various bodily functions, including heart health, brain development, and immune system function. However, unlike other vitamin supplements, the effects of omega-3 supplementation may take some time to become noticeable in your body. We spoke to a health expert to understand why.
According to Meenu Balaji, Chief Nutritionist at Pragmatic Nutrition, Chennai, omega-3 supplements take longer to show noticeable changes depending on various factors such as:
1. Your health goal
2. Current health (nutritional deficiencies, gut health issues, stress, inflammation)
3. The form of omega-3 you are consuming
4. Dosage of the supplement
“When you start taking omega-3 supplements, you may notice changes from around a few weeks to months, depending on the symptom. The time taken for omega-3 integration into the cell membrane can be around 6-12 weeks,” she said.
When it comes to reducing inflammation, omega-3s cannot instantly reduce or stop it. “It takes time to replace omega-6 (pro-inflammatory) with omega-3 (anti-inflammatory), since they both compete for the same enzyme to produce molecules. That is why it is better to take it for at least 3 months,” said the expert.
According to her, it is important to maintain the balance between omega-3 and omega-6, since both are essential fats and needed by the body. When the balance shifts more towards omega-6, you start experiencing signs of inflammation.
Balaji shared some key signs to look out for that indicate your supplement is not working:
A deficiency in omega-3s can even lead to uncomfortable skin issues. According to Dr Shareefa Chause, Dermatologist, Dr Shareefa Skincare Clinic, Mumbai, Omega-3s tend to support the skin’s lipid barrier, retain moisture, and protect against irritants. They also help to reduce inflammation, making them crucial for conditions like eczema, acne, or psoriasis.
Dr Chause also listed some warning signs that indicate Omega-3 deficiency manifesting in your skin: If you are experiencing dry and flaky skin, itchy patches, or increased sensitivity, redness, chances are your diet lacks this fatty acid. Inflammation leading to persistent acne, or premature aging showing up as fine lines, dullness, and wrinkles, can be warning signs.
If your wounds are healing slowly and your acne is recurring despite treatment, consider addressing your nutritional deficiency. She also mentioned that since the body is unable to produce omega-3s on its own, it’s important to get them through food like fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts or even supplements as per the doctor’s advice. However, do not take any type of supplements without consulting a doctor.
“If you notice improved energy levels and focus, lesser joint pain, better lipid profile, and good skin and hair health, you are on the right track,” she shared.
