Ever heard of ‘DOSE’ activities? Yes, they are those tasks that help rejuvenate the body by triggering the hormones. Wondering why we are talking about them today? That’s because we got interested when neuro coach and author Saloni Suri told actor Debina Bonnerjee about the DOSE — Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins — hormones that, she said, get activated in the body only through certain activities.
“This is the daily dose our body needs within 20 minutes of waking up early in the morning. D is for dopamine. Dopamine is only released in our body when we wake up and know the goals for the day. O for Oxytocin is also known as the love hormone. It is produced in the body when we hug. So, you need about seven hugs in a day,” Suri told Bonnerjee on her podcast.
S stand for serotonin, which is released when we selflessly do something for others. “E is for endorphins that released in the body when you walk for 20 minutes or jog in the sun. They are only released when you move your body. When your body moves, your brain grows,” Suri added.
Agreeing with her analysis, Dr Aniket Mule, consultant internal medicine, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road said dopamine is known to aid with motivation and pleasure; oxytocin helps with trust and emotional connections; serotonin enhances mood and promotes contentment and endorphins act as natural painkillers.
“Moreover, regular physical activity such as walking or jogging or a gym session can help release endorphins, serotonin can be released through sunlight exposure. Moreover, nurturing relationships not only boosts oxytocin but also creates a support network that enhances mental health during stressful situations,” said Dr Mule.
According to Dr Mule, by paying attention to ‘DOSE’ every day, one can “proactively participate in hormonal health” rather than being ignorant about it.
“The activities that boost these feel-good hormones are cuddling or hugging a loved one, listening to good music, exercising, sex, meditation, spending time in nature, watching comedy shows and films, massage, laughter, practicing gratitude, aromatherapy with essential oils that soothe and calm you down, happy memories and or goal accomplishment. One can look through looking through photos of a fun family holiday or wedding day which can bring back happy memories,” said Dr Mule.
