Monsoon health: Ayurvedic herbs and tips to enhance your wellbeing

With the season changing and rains occurring in most parts of the country, it is important to take care of your health if you don’t want suffer from a mere cold or cough.

According to Dr Yojana Pokarna, M.D. Ayurveda, Co-founder of Orijine Clinic, the monsoon season is characterised by an aggravation of the vata and pitta doshas.  “By taking care of your health during this season, you can maintain a balance of these doshas, which is essential for overall well-being,” she said.

As per Ayurveda, the months of mid-July to mid-September are called Varsha Ritu or the monsoon. It falls under the Visarga Kala, she explained, i.e., it occurs when the sun is traversing to the south of the equator from its previous position (of Adaan Kala). “The aggravated vata and pitta dosha can disrupt digestion during this season causing issues such as indigestion, bloating and diarrhea,” Dr Pokarna added.

In a situation such as this, taking care of your health during the monsoon season becomes crucial.

Dr Pokarna listed tips, according to Ayurveda, which you should stick to during the monsoon.

*Include warming spices such as ginger, turmeric and cumin in your cooking to aid digestion.

*Drink warm or room temperature water throughout the day to maintain hydration.

*Pay special attention to the feet as they are more prone to infections during the monsoon.

*Avoid heavy workouts, as, according to Ayurveda, heavy exercises increase the pitta (body heat), and hence simple stretches and walking should be done during monsoon. “It is much better to take rest with little exercises in order to keep the vata dosha in balance,” Dr Pokarna explained.

*Steer clear of heavy, oily and fried foods as they can disrupt digestion and cause sluggishness.

*Minimise the consumption of raw vegetables and salads during the monsoon as they may contain waterborne bacteria. Instead, opt for steamed or cooked vegetables.

Ashwagandha

An adaptogenic herb known for its rejuvenating and stress-relieving properties, Dr Pokarna said that Ashwagandha helps reduce stress, improves energy levels and strengthens the immune system. “Ashwagandha also supports overall well-being and promotes a healthy nervous system,” she added.

Triphala

Triphala is a blend of three fruits: Amalaki (Indian Gooseberry), Bibhitaki and Haritaki. A gentle yet effective herbal combination, Dr Pokarna explained that it aids in digestion, promotes detoxification and supports overall gastrointestinal health. “Triphala also helps enhance immunity and acts as a natural antioxidant,” she said.

Tulsi

Tulsi helps boost immunity, fights respiratory infections and supports healthy digestion, according to Dr Pokarna. She added that it has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial during the monsoon when the risk of infections is higher.

Ginger

A warming herb that aids digestion, reduces inflammation and boosts the immune system, ginger helps alleviate digestive issues like bloating, indigestion and nausea, Dr Pokarna said.

Turmeric

Turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, she said. “It helps boost immunity, supports healthy digestion, and aids in reducing inflammation and joint pain. (due to aggravated vata dosha),” Dr Pokarna explained.
