Following her appearance on Netflix’s Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives, Shalini Passi and everything she does has become the talk of the town. After opening up about her diet, the art collector recently revealed that she swears by kala namak, or black salt, for good health.

“Kala namak is the biggest detox for your health. Add it with lemon and water. It removes acidity from the body, it alkalises the body, and it will remove all water retention. It is amazing,” Passi told PinkVilla.

But is it?

Jinal Patel, dietitian, Zynova Shalby Hospital Mumbai said Indian black salt, known as kala namak, combines an array of minerals that are not only tantalising to the palate but are also used for “detoxification.” “When infused with antioxidants and vitamin C-rich lemon, it creates a refreshing tonic that aids in flushing out toxins from the body,” said Patel.

She added that the salt also contains essential electrolytes like potassium and magnesium, which allow for balanced pH levels and promote healthy digestion. “This concoction is believed to improve metabolic processes while providing vital nourishment to the body. Lemons stimulate liver function, facilitating the more efficient elimination of harmful substances from the body,” said Patel.

Patel shared that, together with the mineral content of black salt, this mix may alleviate common digestive issues such as bloating or indigestion.

However, Patel contended that one has to be cautious when adding lemon. Too much lemon is known to cause acid reflux, upset stomach, and migraine. The acidic content in lemon also causes tooth enamel erosion. ”

How much to have?

Instead of sipping on it the entire day, restrict it to 3-4 times. “Don’t just opt for detox water because it’s trending on social media. Consult an expert who will help you understand its benefits and then only start with it briefly,” said Patel.
