Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa, who announced their pregnancy in July, have shared details about the journey that led them here. In a recent conversation with Soha Ali Khan on her YouTube channel, Patralekhaa reflected on her experience with egg freezing and how it compared with her current pregnancy.

Revealing that she had frozen her eggs three years ago, she admitted the process was far more challenging than she had expected. “I had also frozen my eggs about three years back, and now that I am pregnant, I feel pregnancy was way easier than freezing the eggs. My doctor didn’t tell me how difficult it was going to be,” she said. Patralekhaa added that the physical and emotional side effects were significant. “Also, the blues that I had once my egg freezing was done. So between the two, I would always recommend that the young girls should just get pregnant. It’s just easier than going through that whole process.”

Interestingly, she revealed that despite having frozen her eggs, she conceived naturally. She shared that her pregnancy came as a surprise, mentioning, “I did not know that I was pregnant as the pregnancy test kit showed me a negative result, and I found out once I visited my gynecologist for a consultation.” After receiving the news, she and Rajkummar decided to keep the pregnancy private for the first three months.

But what does egg freezing actually involve, and why might some women find it more physically or emotionally challenging than pregnancy?

Dr Gaana Sreenivas, obstetrician and gynaecologist at Bone and Birth Clinic and Rainbow Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, tells indianexpress.com, “Egg freezing is a medical process where the ovaries are stimulated with hormones to produce multiple eggs in one cycle. These eggs are then retrieved through a minor procedure and preserved for future use. While the procedure itself is safe, the hormonal stimulation can cause bloating, mood swings, fatigue, or discomfort.”

Some women also feel anxious about the uncertainty of how their body will respond, adds Dr Sreenivas. Unlike pregnancy, where the body naturally adjusts to changes, egg freezing is an induced process that can feel more demanding both physically and emotionally.

Emotional or mental health effects women can experience during or after fertility treatments

It is common for women to experience mood changes, anxiety, or even short phases of low mood after fertility treatments like egg freezing. “The combination of hormonal changes, physical discomfort, and the pressure of future fertility decisions can feel overwhelming. Support from family, open conversations with the treating doctor, and access to counseling or support groups can make a big difference. Normalising these emotions and ensuring women do not feel isolated is an important part of care,” states Dr Sreenivas.

What should young women realistically consider before opting for egg freezing?

Egg freezing can be a valuable option for women who wish to preserve fertility, Dr Sreenivas notes, especially if they need to delay pregnancy for medical, personal, or professional reasons. However, it should not be seen as a guarantee of future pregnancy.

“Success rates depend on age, egg quality, and other health factors. Women should have a clear discussion with their doctor about the benefits, limitations, costs, and realistic outcomes before making the decision. The choice should come from being well informed rather than out of fear or pressure,” concludes the expert.
