Managing weight postpartum can take its own time — from a few weeks to months, or even years — depending on a lot of factors. But, new mother Gauahar Khan — who recently gave birth to a baby boy with husband Zaid Darbar — has revealed that she lost 10 kilos in 10 days postpartum and plans to lose six more.

“Lost 10 kgs in 10 days postpartum! Alhamdulliah! Six more to go!” wrote Gauahar Khan, who delivered her first child on May 10, 2023. Take a look at her Instagram Story below.

How soon is too soon to lose weight postpartum?

Dr Shobha Gupta, medical director and IVF specialist from Mother’s Lap IVF Centre New Delhi and Vrindavan explained that one is likely to lose approximately 4-5 kgs immediately following delivery, which includes the weight of the baby, placenta, and amniotic fluid. “As your body eliminates extra water weight during the first week following birth, you’ll also lose an additional 2-3kgs. In the first few weeks after giving birth, it’s not uncommon for women to lose up to 8 to 10 kgs,” Dr Gupta told indianexpress.com.

However, every woman is different. So, some may discover that losing weight comes more quickly for them than it does for others.

“Additionally, it depends on how much weight you put on while pregnant. It can be simpler for you to lose weight after giving birth if you gained weight within the acceptable range for your build and height. To get back to your pre-pregnancy weight, though, it can take longer if you put on more weight than is advised,” added Dr Gupta.

Dr Pratima Thamke, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar said it is not advisable to aim for quick weight loss and push oneself too much. “One will have to set realistic goals. It is better to take the help of an expert who will guide you regarding what you should eat and delete from the diet. You will have to stick to a well-balanced diet, inclusive of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses, lentils, and legumes. It is essential to stay away from junk, oily, canned, and processed foods. Say no to sodas, colas, sweets, and desserts. Drink enough water to stay hydrated,” said Dr Thamke.

While it is essential to exercise daily without fail only after the doctor’s advice, do not do any rigorous activities that can make you prone to injuries.

“Do exercises such as walking, swimming, gymming, yoga, or jogging at least five days a week for 45 minutes and you will surely be able to achieve your weight loss goals. Apart from diet and exercise, you will have to stay stress-free and sleep well for a minimum number of hours. Do not follow any extreme diets that can have a negative impact on your health. Also, starving is not a good idea. It is better to eat in the quantity recommended by the expert and at regular intervals,” said Dr Thamke.
