There are so many home remedies that incorporate a range of spices and herbs that can help you with common weather-related issues like cold, cough and sore throat. Adding to the numerous ways, we found this concoction made of turmeric, black pepper, jaggery, and ghee that child nutritionist Mona Narula recommended on her Instagram which is a “tried and tested remedy” for her.
“Here’s a tried and trusted home remedy that I’ve been having since my childhood and give it to my daughter too. This soothing mix of black pepper, turmeric, ghee, and jaggery is excellent as ghee soothes the itchy throat providing instant relief while turmeric and pepper have anti-inflammatory properties that help fight cold and cough. It’s also excellent for strong immunity!” said Narula.
Here’s the recipe to prepare the mix.
Ingredients
1/2tsp – Turmeric powder
1/2tsp – Black pepper powder or crushed black pepper
1 cup water
Jaggery as per taste
1/2tsp – Ghee
Method
*Take 1 cup water and add 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and mix it well
*Add jaggery as per taste and bring this mix to a boil
*Strain it, add 1/2 tsp ghee, and have it hot.
According to Narula, turmeric is abundant in phytonutrients and offers valuable protection for the body, while its key component, curcumin, aids in the treatment of bacterial infections. “Ghee provides warmth to the body, imparts a soothing effect to the throat, and improves immunity. Black pepper has anti-inflammatory properties and when combined with turmeric, it helps the body absorb all the benefits of turmeric,” said Narula.
Does this concoction work?
Calling it a kadha or a warm potent mix of spices for sore throat, clinical dietitian Garima Goyal called it one of the best combinations.
“Black pepper contains piperine. The main benefit of this compound is to increase the absorption of curcumin by up to 2000 per cent,” said Goyal, adding that turmeric fights off inflammation as this phytonutrient has anti-inflammatory properties. “So the body ache felt in fever can definitely be healed with a warm glass of this kadha. It will work as a natural paracetamol and relax your body,” said Goyal.
According to Goyal, the fatty acids present in ghee reduce throat irritation. “So having a glass daily is not only beneficial during fever days but otherwise too to keep cold and cough at bay,” said Goyal.
A warm glass of this kadha at bedtime is a great remedy to give rest to the body. “The amino acid content of turmeric has sleep-inducing properties. Jaggery and ghee will relax the irritation of the throat,” said Goyal.
