Pankaj Tripathi not only has a unique style of acting, but his way of preparing tea is also different. The Stree 2 actor, who loves having poha with his masala chai, told podcaster Prajakta Koli on Netflix, “My tea is special…I make my masala chai in a special way. I add bay leaf or tej patta. It’s a really nice chai with bay leaf. I like poha with my tea.”
Ingredients
Clove
Cardamom
Ginger
Bay leaf
Water
Milk
Method
Mix all the spices, excluding bay leaf, and ground coarsely using a pestle and mortar.
Once the water starts boiling, add the ground masala along with the bay leaf.
Add sugar and milk according to taste.
Enjoy.
Adding bay leaves to masala chai is safe and can benefit digestion and immunity. “Bay leaves contain essential oils and compounds, such as cineole and eugenol, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and digestive properties. When infused in chai, bay leaves release these compounds, enhancing the tea’s flavour while offering added health benefits,” said Dr Birali Swetha, chief dietician, Gleneagles Aware Hospital, LB Nagar, Hyderabad.
Sushma PS, chief dietitian, Jindal Naturecure Institute, concurred and said that bay leaves help with “digestion and reduce gas.” “Add one or two bay leaves to the water while boiling. Remove them before serving,” said Sushma.
Bay leaves support digestion by stimulating gastric enzymes, which can help prevent bloating or discomfort after meals. “The leaves also contain antioxidants, which can help combat oxidative stress and support immune function. Additionally, bay leaves have been traditionally used for their mild anti-inflammatory effects, potentially benefiting those who experience mild joint discomfort or inflammation,” said Dr Birali.
Additionally, bay leaves are a good source of vitamins A, B6, and C, which support your immune system. “Bay leaves have long been used as a remedy for seasonal illnesses,” shared Sushma.
However, it is advisable to use bay leaves in moderation, as their strong flavour can easily overpower the tea if too many are used. “Generally, one or two leaves are enough to subtly enhance the chai without altering its taste profile drastically,” said Dr Birali.
Adding bay leaves to masala chai is a good choice for both flavour and health, especially if you enjoy the unique aroma and taste. As with all spices, moderation is key for the best balance of flavour and benefits.
