It was only a matter of time before the famous Pan-Asian cuisine brand Mamagoto opened its doors in the City of Joy. After all, Kolkata’s intimate relationship with China and Chinese cuisine is well-known, and with an increasing interest in Japanese and Korean fare across India, the city is a natural choice for any food brand.
Once you enter the Park Street premises, you’re hit with the characteristic spicy aromas thanks to the semi-open kitchen, and that will have you salivating immediately. Without much ado, we tucked into the some of the new additions to the restaurant chain’s menu. The Java Grilled Tofu (Rs 299, and there is a fish version too), served on a sizzler platter with sticky rice, seasoned cucumber and the hot sambal sauce is reminiscent of a Bengali paturi. The spicy sauce and tender Tofu made for an awesome combination, with the sticky rice rounding off the flavours.
The dumplings selection of Crystal veg (Rs 349) and Rainbow Chicken (Rs 429) was average, but the Prawn and Celery dumplings (Rs 489) really stood out by a huge margin. The Summer roll with Basil Dip (Chicken) (Rs 399), which was chicken wrapped in Vietnamese rice paper rolls, came highly recommended, and it lived up to the hype. A chopsticks approval to the dip, which was wonderfully fresh, being simultaneously hot and cool. We sampled the Silky Wilky Tofu Salad (Rs 419) as well, so you can safely give it a miss.
For the main course, we tried the Teriyaki Meal in a Bowl (Tofu/Chicken) (Rs 529/Rs 579), which would easily transport you to a sizzling counter in a South-Asian street market — well-seasoned and spicy rich. The Fiery Thai Shrimp Fried Rice with Asian green Chilli Chicken Ribbon is visually stunning and hits your taste buds with an onslaught of flavours.
Stuffed but always willing to sample desserts, the Banofee Pie (Rs 299) was garnished with spun sugar, which looked beautiful, but alas failed to deliver on flavour.
Though, we may not have finished on a high, overall Mamagoto Kolkata plays to its strength and when in Kolkata, you can never have too much of Oriental food, so that way, the restaurant should see brisk business all through the year.
