Putting an end to speculations surrounding actor Mukul Dev’s death, his elder brother Rahul Dev said that Mukul spent over eight days in intensive care before his passing away on May 23 this year. According to Rahul, the reason was his brother’s neglect of personal health, especially his poor eating habits. “He was in the ICU for eight and a half days. Medically, it was a result of poor eating habits. In the last four-five days, he had stopped eating altogether. Of course, he felt lonely and lost interest in life. Usko zindagi jeene ka jazba nahi tha…(he didn’t have the willingness to live)” Rahu said.

Notably, Mukul had moved to Delhi in 2019 to care for their sick father, who passed the same year. Their mother also passed away in 2023. In the interview with ET Times, Rahul admitted that only after completing the last rites, he began to register the grief, which will grow with time. He lived alone and missed his daughter, which intensified his emotional isolation, the Shaapit actor continued.

But is there a link between poor eating habits and loneliness?

Dr Rajeshwari Panda, head of the dietetics department, Medicover Hospital, Kharghar Navi Mumbai said loneliness and poor eating habits are closely intertwined, as emotional states significantly influence dietary choices. “Individuals experiencing loneliness may resort to unhealthy eating as a coping mechanism, leading to compulsive eating, bingeing, or reliance on convenience foods high in sugar and fat. These food choices can provide temporary comfort but often escalate into a cycle of unhealthy habits that worsen emotional well-being,” said Dr Panda.

Poor eating habits pose several health risks, including obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and digestive issues. Dr Panda said they can lead to nutritional deficiencies, weakening the immune system, and increasing susceptibility to illness.

“Furthermore, unhealthy eating patterns can contribute to mental health issues, intensifying feelings of loneliness and creating a vicious cycle that is hard to break,” said Dr Panda.

Addressing these habits is critical for both physical and mental health. Dr Panda said it is essential to recognise the signs of loneliness and seek social connections through friends, family, or community groups. “Additionally, prioritising nutritious meals rich in whole foods can combat the urge to eat poorly. Mindful eating practices can also improve the relationship with food, helping individuals to reconnect with their bodies and emotions. By making conscious choices, one can mitigate the negative impact of loneliness and foster better overall health,” said Dr Panda.
