How good are McDonald’s all-new Schezwan burgers and Chilli Paneer pockets?

We sample McDonald’s Kung-Fu Panda 3-inspired Chinese menu.

The Kung Fu Panda 3-inspired Chinese menu from McDonald’s lacks punch.

Ask any Kung Fu Panda fan what Po, the giant panda and Dragon Warrior, loves to eat, and you’ll know that the answer isn’t a burger. If Po had to endorse a food legacy, it would have been a selection of dumplings, irresistible as they were to him and used by the crafty Master Shifu teach him the fine art of Kung Fu. But off screen, McDonald’s India is cashing in on the film’s success this summer.

The fast-food chain has launched a Chinese menu in India, which included chilli paneer pockets, the McChicken Schezwan burger, the McVeggie Schezwan burger and the McFlurry Passion Fruit ice cream. The Chilli Paneer Pockets (at Rs 35 for 2) – with gummy filling and doughy pockets – leave you with dragon breath; the burgers (Rs 95 for McVeggie and Rs 108 for McChicken) are a desperate attempt at Szechwan cuisine with a blood-red garlic sauce smeared stingily on one corner of the patty. The patties are the regular McVeggie and McChicken versions and the Sichuan sauce ends in a bite.

The Chilli Paneer Pockets came with a gummy filling, doughy pockets and no sign of paneer

The dessert — McFlurry Passion Fruit (Rs 80) — is the only edible part of the menu, but only until the fruity bits last. It’s a generous portion of vanilla ice cream that is as processed as it looks. Master Shifu would have never approved of this menu in any case. Let’s just say that McDonald’s doesn’t always deliver happy meals.
