Every vegetable consumed as part of a balanced meal has a role to play. Does the same hold true for green chillies, too? Home chef Manju Mittal shared that eating one green chilly with your meals is actually good for health. “One green chilly with every meal helps to clear out your skin, improves metabolism and also helps you lose weight,” Mittal claimed in an Instagram post.
Fauziya Ansari, dietician, Apollo Spectra Mumbai, said that while it is true that green chillies are a good source of essential nutrients like vitamins and antioxidants, which are good for your metabolism, their consumption must be restricted. “The high capsaicin content in green chillies can significantly irritate the stomach lining leading to burning sensation, acidity, and even heartburn,” said Ansari.
She noted that people with sensitive stomachs or conditions like acid reflux or ulcers should avoid eating green chillies daily as it can quickly worsen their condition. “Also, chillies are generally spicy, which can cause a burning sensation in the mouth and throat. Capsaicin in chillies can activate the pain receptors in your digestive tract, which can create a burning sensation as the food moves through the already irritated intestines,” said Ansari.
She added that there is no research to suggest a direct connection between eating chillies and clear skin.
Eating too many chillies daily can speed up your digestion while causing loose stools or severe cramps, cautioned Ansari. “This is why it is important to avoid eating green chillies every day. If you like to eat green chillies, then do not eat more than one,” Ansari said.
She also suggested opting for the lighter green variety of green chillies as it is less spicy than the darker or red ones. “Pay attention to a balanced meal so that your gut and skin reflect good health. It is also advisable to avoid excessively spicy foods long-term,” said Ansari.
