There is nothing quite like a bowl of warm soup, but it turns out that it is more than just the comfort factor that has made this classic dish a cure for all maladies. Science, too, says that there are many benefits to chicken soup, especially when prepared with the skin and bones on.

Jasleen Kaur, dietitian and nutritionist, says that more than anything else, it is a great source of protein. “Everybody lacks protein these days. This is a dish that has high protein and is also good for weight loss,” she told indianexpress.com, adding, “It is also very good for people who are at the gym a lot. If taken every day it can promote bone health and aid in joint pains. Just make sure to keep the salt levels a little low so that it does not increase your blood pressure.”

She also advises that if you are suffering from a cold or cough, a few easy additions can make this soup a cure for that too. “Add ginger, garlic and clove to your chicken soup to get rid of phlegm or congestion,” she explained.

Remya Rajan, a consultant nutritionist from Bengaluru, agrees that a simple chicken soup can be very nutritious and beneficial. “Chicken soup has got amino acids that resemble properties in medicines used to fight infections such as bronchitis. L Carnosine and Cysteine present in the broth help in thinning of mucus. But to retain the carnosine effect we need to consume soup multiple times a day,” she shared with indianexpress.com.

She continued that chicken is also high in Tryptophan, an amino acid, that helps your body produce serotonin, and can enhance your mood and give you the feeling of ‘comfort’. If you make the soup with the skin on the chicken, it is a good nutrient source rich in carbs, protein and fat, and, therefore, it becomes a meal replacement and a filling dinner. She adds that the gelatine in the bones, when boiled correctly, is rich in many nutrients and also helps protect the inner lining of the digestive tract. So it has got a gut-healing property too.

So the next time you are feeling down, grab a bowl of piping hot soup to chase those blues away!
