Welcome to the kitchen! Most people spend more than three-fourths of their lives in this space considering we all need food to function. Having said that, it is necessary to be in the know-how of certain hacks that can help you save time and effort in the kitchen. Prolonging the shelf life of certain foods can seem to be an insurmountable task but a few hacks can help you do that quite conveniently and mess-free too.
An Instagram page Cookist Wow shared a few hacks to keep perishable foods fresh for longer.
Cheese
Do you store it in plastic wrap? That’s wrong! This “suffocates” your cheese which, for proper conservation, needs to “breathe” so as not to dry out or, worse, create mould. Wrap it in parchment paper and it will last up to 7 days on the top shelf of the fridge.
Bananas
Did you know that bananas in the fridge ripen faster? Store them at room temperature, and wrap the stem in plastic wrap. This way the gas that causes ripening, ethylene, won’t be released and the aging process will slow down.
Celery and carrots
No more storing celery and carrots in the plastic bags you bought them in! After washing them properly, place them in glass jars and fill them with water. Place the lid and leave them in the fridge, they will last up to 7 days.
Herbs
If your herbs are drying out don’t worry! You can freeze them by placing them in ice trays and adding olive oil. They will keep perfectly and will be ready to use for your recipes.
Salad
You can keep salad fresh like the day you bought it! Store it in a glass container or zip lock bag by covering it with paper towels. The paper will dry out the moisture and keep it fresh longer.
Additionally, Dt Shalini Garwin Bliss, executive dietitian, Manipal Hospital Gurugram shared some of the precautions while storing non-perishable foods like cereals and pulses.
*You should carefully clean them to remove gravel, husk, and other foreign matter (if possible wash them), and dry thoroughly in the sun.
*You need to store them in clean containers which have tightfitting lids. These containers can be of tin, aluminum, plastic, or glass. Clay pots or gunny bags are also used in case of large quantities.
*These containers should be put either in the store room or in the storage cupboard in your kitchen.
*It is better to have a storage space away from the kitchen because the temperatures in the kitchen are higher than what is ideal for storage.
