Siddhant Chaturvedi, known for his versatile acting, has raised the bar again with his preparation for his upcoming action film — Yudhra

The Gully Boy actor dove deep into a rigorous training regime that included mixed martial arts (MMA), kickboxing, and Jiu-Jitsu. This was confirmed by celebrity fitness coach Rohit Nair in a recent interview, where he spoke about Chaturvedi’s preparation.

He said, “I didn’t work on the action in Yudhra, but I trained Siddhant because he wanted to be better at action as he had a lot of action requirements in the film. He did regular MMA and jiu-jitsu with me before he went for the action scenes. Everything wasn’t shot in Mumbai, and I couldn’t travel with him, but he trained with me for MMA, kickboxing, and jiu-jitsu while he was here.”

Debojit Dasgupta, coach and co-founder at Flamingo Jiu-Jitsu, says, “Combining multiple martial arts disciplines offers a comprehensive workout that targets every muscle group while enhancing coordination, flexibility, and mental toughness.”

This is how each exercise works

MMA

Kickboxing

Jiu-Jitsu

Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, is a relatively young sport, but its roots trace back to ancient combat traditions like Pankration in ancient Greece and Vale Tudo in Brazil. MMA’s explosive popularity is due to its “anything goes” nature (within a set of safety rules, of course!), where practitioners can utilise strikes, takedowns, and submissions from various martial arts. Kickboxing has a long and colourful history, evolving from various martial arts traditions worldwide. It gained popularity in the 1970s as a competitive sport blending techniques from Muay Thai, Karate, and Western boxing. Kickboxing focuses on striking, utilizing punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. Jiu-Jitsu, rooted in ancient Japanese martial arts, focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It emphasises leverage and technique over brute strength, enabling smaller individuals to overcome larger opponents.
By training in MMA, you’ll develop:

Full-Body Strength: Every muscle group is engaged, from powerful punches and kicks to grappling and takedowns.

Cardiovascular Endurance: MMA training’s intense, dynamic nature pushes your cardiovascular system to the limit, enhancing your stamina and endurance.

Flexibility & Agility: MMA’s diverse movements, like high kicks and takedown defenses, promote flexibility and agility.

Functional Fitness: The skills you acquire in MMA translate directly to real-life situations, improving your overall physical preparedness.

Through kickboxing training, you can expect:

Powerful Strikes: Develop explosive power in your punches and kicks, strengthening your arms, legs, and core.

Improved Coordination and Balance: Kickboxing requires precise coordination between your upper and lower body, enhancing your overall balance and agility.

Cardiovascular Conditioning: Kickboxing training’s high intensity provides an excellent cardiovascular workout, boosting endurance and stamina.

Stress Relief: The physical exertion and focus required in kickboxing training help release tension and reduce stress.

Jiu-Jitsu training can offer:

Functional Strength and Flexibility: The grappling techniques build strength and flexibility in your entire body.

Self-Defense Skills: Jiu-Jitsu equips you with effective self-defense techniques that can be used in real-life situations.

Mental Toughness: Overcoming challenges on the mat builds mental resilience and the ability to stay calm under pressure.

Problem-Solving Skills: Jiu-jitsu is often called “human chess,” and it requires strategic thinking and adaptability to overcome an opponent.

Mental fortitude: The mind-body connection

The combined training in MMA, kickboxing, and Jiu-Jitsu goes beyond the physical. It cultivates a deep mind-body connection, fostering mental focus and discipline that extends to all areas of life, says Dasgupta.

He adds, “Martial arts require you to be fully present, anticipating your opponent’s moves and reacting instinctively. This heightened awareness cultivates mindfulness and enhances your ability to focus.”

“Mastering complex techniques and pushing through physical challenges requires dedication and discipline. This mental fortitude translates to other areas of life, helping you stay committed to your goals and overcome obstacles,” Dasgupta remarks.

Precautions to take

While these martial arts are incredibly empowering, it’s important to train smart and prioritise safety.

Qualified Instructors: Seek guidance from experienced instructors who prioritise proper technique and safety protocols.

Progressive Training: Start slowly and gradually increase the intensity and complexity of your workouts to avoid overexertion and injury.

Protective Gear: Always use appropriate protective gear, such as gloves, headgear, and mouthguards.

Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to any pain or discomfort, and rest when needed. Pushing through pain can lead to serious injuries.

Warm-Up and Cool-Down: Never skip a warm-up or cool-down. These are essential for preparing your body for the demands of training and aiding in recovery.
