Not just his much-loved films, Salman Khan is also known for his sculpted physique and impressive strength. As evident from his social media feed, the actor follows a rigorous workout routine that combines weight training and cardio exercises, among others. However, Salman recently got injured, seemingly on the sets of his upcoming film Tiger 3, while lifting dumbbells.
Sharing the news on social media with a quirky caption, the 57-year-old posted a picture of himself showing a huge bandage on the back of his shoulder. “When you think you are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, he says duniya ko chodo paanch kilo ka dumbbell utha ke dikhao (leave the world aside, pick up a 5kg dumbbell). Tiger Zakhmi Hai (tiger is injured). #Tiger3,” he tweeted.
Lifting dumbbells is an effective way to build strength and improve overall fitness. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced lifter, incorporating dumbbell exercises into your workout routine can help enhance muscle tone, increase bone density, and boost metabolism. However, one must be careful with dumbbell exercises to avoid any injuries, experts note.
“People need to be cautious while lifting weights. If not done in a proper manner there is a high risk of tendon and ligament tears, prolapsed intervertebral discs, hernias etc,” Dr Dilip Gude, Senior Consultant Physician, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, said.
He suggested focusing on gradually increasing the weights of the dumbbells. “Using a dumbbell with lesser weight for a longer time is a good start. After a decent muscle mass is built, you can go for higher weights. While lifting weights, one should try to have an upright posture — bend at knees rather than at the back,” he said.
Agreeing, Pankaj Mehta, Master Trainer, Gffi Fitness Academy, shared the following dos and don’ts you must keep in mind while lifting dumbbells.
*Before lifting, do a nice warm-up for at least 5-10 minutes followed by dynamic stretching to increase the range of motion.
*Lift and move with the correct technique.
*Heavier dumbbells should be lifted with trainer’s help or by staging dumbbells on a stand.
*Both hands should move in the same direction during double-hand movements.
*Use controllable weights.
*Range of motion should be according to flexibility and limit of joints.
But, certain people must stay from lifting dumbbells. “People with intervertebral disc disease and chronic low backache, known heart disease with reduced ejection fraction, those with heart rhythm disorders, coronary artery disease etc should opt for lighter exercises than lifting weights. Before opting for a strenuous workout, a thorough physical whole body health check and having a physician certify is always better,” Dr Gude said.
