In a fun video, Deepika Padukone can be seen trying to ace hula hoops — the hoop that is twirled around the waist, neck, or limbs. The video featuring the Pathaan actor with artist Yianni Tsapatori captures her multiple attempts at getting it right. Taking up the challenge to ace it pretty quick, Deepika seemed to have cracked it in a 12-second attempt in the final take. While the video is definitely a reminder for all of us to enjoy the little moments, it drew considerable praise from her fans and followers.

One wrote, “Deepika Padukone: actor, entrepreneur, producer, mental health advocate and now hula hoop expert,” while another shared, “Fantastic exercise @deepikapadukone”.

Taking the cue, we decided to understand why the fun act also counts as a good form of exercise.

What is a hula hoop exercise?

Hula hooping may sound very simple to you – grabbing a plastic hoop and circling it around your body, just above the hips. But it requires practice to do it the correct way, said fitness expert Garima Goyal.

Why do hula hoop?

Great for your belly – This is a type of exercise that helps to strengthen your core because to keep the hoop swinging, the abdominal muscles are used. So consistently practising with hula hooping tones up your abdominal muscles. “Using a weighted hula hoop is more advantageous as the resistance added makes the abdominal muscles work even harder. It even helps to shed inches around your waist and hip,” Goyal shared.

Maintains the body’s balance – By toning up the abdominal muscles, hula hooping plays a great role in building the body’s balance as well as a good posture.

Convenient – This can be considered a great exercise for your core that is convenient and inexpensive as it can be done anywhere and all you need is a hula hoop.

The entire body can be involved – Though traditional hula hooping targets the core area, you can make use of a hula hoop even on your arms to tone up the biceps, triceps, or shoulders. “It’s a great adaptable exercise in which you can involve your whole body. There are endless possibilities and variations possible with a hula hoop,” said Goyal.

Postural correction – What is evident is that once an individual’s core is toned up, he will definitely have a great posture. Just 10 minutes of hula hooping can give an immense number of health benefits, Goyal urged.

Great aerobic exercise – Weighted or regular hula hoops are a great cardio activity that will get your heart beat faster, thus aiding in burning calories. “So you get a stronger heart, stronger immune system, and a great mood with just a hula hoop,” said Goyal.

Puts minimal strain on joints – This exercise is a low-impact exercise that puts minimal strain on the joints.

How to correctly do a hula hoop?

*Make sure the hoop is big enough – the bigger the hoop, the easier it is!
*Start the hoop on the small of your back and give it a strong push into your waist
*Push forwards and back not in big circles (circles make the hoop fall down!)
*Keep trying! “It takes lots of practice so don’t be discouraged,” said Goyal.
