A resurfaced video on Reddit features Naga alongside his co-star Anu Emmanuel during the promotional campaign for their film “Shailaja Reddy Alludu” (2018). When asked if they had ever cheated in a relationship, Naga is seen holding up a “yes” placard, stating, “Everyone should experience everything in life. That’s when you grow up and figure out, okay I’ve had all experiences, now it’s time to settle down.”

Cheating in a relationship can be incredibly painful and confusing. Dr Shaunak Ajinkya, Consultant, Psychiatrist, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital Mumbai, explained that people may cheat if they feel emotionally or sexually unfulfilled in their current relationship, but are afraid to leave.

Some other reasons, according to him, are temptation and novelty, revenge or retaliation to punish a partner for perceived wrongs.

“Our emotional needs evolve. If a relationship fails to meet these needs consistently, dissatisfaction grows. This could be a lack of affection, emotional validation, or a sense of shared purpose,” added Navyashri S, Clinical Psychologist, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru. She noted that these reasons often co-occur.

Are some people more susceptible to cheat?

Certain personality traits and past experiences can increase the risk of infidelity, said Dr Ajinkya:

Low Self-Esteem: Seeking validation from others can lead to seeking attention outside the relationship.

Attachment Issues: People with avoidant or anxious attachment styles may struggle with intimacy and commitment.

Narcissism: An inflated sense of self-importance can lead to prioritizing personal desires over a partner’s feelings.

Sex Addiction: Compulsive sexual behavior can drive individuals to seek out multiple relationships.

Childhood Trauma: Difficulties with trust and intimacy due to past abuse can make someone more prone to cheating.

Commitment Phobia: Fear of intimacy can lead to self-sabotage through infidelity.

Impulsivity: Acting without considering consequences can result in risky behavior.

Mental Health Conditions: Disorders affecting impulse control like bipolar disorder or borderline personality disorder can increase the risk of cheating.

Ultimately, the decision to leave a relationship is complex and personal. A psychologist can help individuals and couples explore their reasons for wanting to leave or stay, navigate communication challenges, and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
