Dulquer Salmaan, one of the most bankable actors, opened up about his personal life and his love story with his wife Amal Sufiya.
Talking about his courtship period which was about six months and married life with his wife Amal, the Guns & Gulaabs actor said that she keeps him grounded. “Amal did see me when I had no clue. When we met, I told her I want to at least act in one film and direct one film. I don’t think she fully understood any of it. Her family has zero exposure to the industry. She has seen me every day even when I have been growing, and when it has been bad days. She has seen all of it. She balances it. You need that grounding,” expressed 37-year-old Dulquer in a conversation with YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia on his show BeerBiceps.
Opening up about how he met Amal, Dulquer shared that they happen to be from the same school. “We are both from the same school. She was 5-6 years younger. I wasn’t seeing anyone. I started getting these ‘rishtas’ and stuff. I randomly started bumping into my wife who I never saw in Chennai till then. A lot of people kept telling me about her. When I started seeing her out, I think I started seeing her 3 times a week. So, I took it as a sign. I asked her out for a coffee. She didn’t reply for two days and I was wondering if I did something wrong. But then she was very sweet, she responded in the affirmative and said, ‘Let’s meet’. I guess we both kind of kept the parents in the loop,” mentioned Dulquer, who got married in 2011.
He also shared that they have literally been in a “long-distance marriage” forever. “Every little chance we got to spend time together meant a lot. It is always been long-distance. It takes effort but you also start to value the little things. Since I am always living out of a suitcase in a hotel, I don’t get to spend time doing anything with my family. If I was in a 9-5 job, I would always drive her insane,” said a smiling Dulquer.
How do they balance each other? “I love people around. I still like to go out. It is not that Amal is anti-social but she likes to turn in early. While I like to step out that time. So, we kind of balance,” said Dulquer.
As one of the most stylish actors in recent times, he also opened up about his eye for detail and always wanting to dress up like a man from his early childhood days. “I have always had an eye for detail. I like to enjoy every little detail. I remember I used to always want to dress up like a man even when I was little — with the bow and tie. I liked it,” said Dulquer, who is fondly called DQ.
How does he stay so happy?
Urging that one should enjoy life, Dulquer said, “I think I love what I do. The only major conflict I am going through now is being away from home. I have a daughter who is six and that’s been magical. You don’t want to miss it. It is your need. It is not their need as much as it is your need to be there for the big moments and see all of that. When a child is born, so are the parents. It is life-changing. Till then, you think you know what love is. But trust me, there is nothing like that of your child. It will be like you have never had that feeling in your life. I am sure my wife feels the same way.”
And, what would be his advice to his younger self?
“It is not just the wedding. But what marriage is definitely companionship,” said Dulquer, adding that the best way to spend money is your experiences on travel instead of multiple things of the same type.
