Vivek Oberoi recently shared that many of his exes attended his wedding to his wife Priyanka Alva. Speaking with Anas Bukhash on his YouTube channel, the actor said, “I stayed friends with a lot of my casual girlfriends and a lot of them even came to my wedding.”

Be that as it may, is it ever really a good idea to remain friends with an ex? We looked to the experts for advice.

Radhika Mohta, a matchmaker and relationship coach, is firmly against the idea. “Your ex is an ex for a reason.” She noted that it might be more worthwhile to examine why is it that you still want to remain friends with them in the first place. “Are you hiding it from your current partner? Have you told them this person who you’re now friends with was romantically involved with you?”

Dr Parth Nagda, psychiatrist at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, noted that remaining friends with an ex can only be beneficial if both individuals have fully resolved their emotional attachments with each other and maintain clear boundaries.

“When unresolved feelings persist, it can lead to emotional distress and hinder personal growth,” he said.

However, if you have decided to remain friends with an ex, some ground rules should be set.

– Clear boundaries are essential, with open communication about expectations and potential pitfalls. Here, time and distance after the breakup can provide clarity and emotional healing.

– Prioritise self-care, including monitoring your emotional reactions to them and seeking professional help, if needed.

– Consider the impact on current and future relationships and address any jealousy or insecurity.

-Frequent conflicts, misunderstandings, or if the friendship feels one-sided, with unequal effort, are also signs it may not be working.

Ultimately, a friendship with an ex should promote emotional health and stability, so prioritise your well-being.
