A fashion show in Kashmir hosted by designer duo Shivan Bhatiya and Narresh Kukreja has landed in controversy for featuring what critics call “obscene” outfits during the holy month of Ramadan.
The event, held on March 7 in Gulmarg, drew sharp criticism from religious, political, and social circles, with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah demanding a report within 24 hours.
Marking their 15th anniversary in the fashion industry, Shivan and Narresh showcased their latest skiwear collection at a renowned ski resort in Gulmarg. The collection featured art prints from the brand’s archives, including sculptural ski suits, après-ski dresses, and winter layers. However, the timing of the event, coinciding with Ramadan, triggered a backlash from the local community.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called the event a “complete disregard for local sensitivities”, further igniting debate over the clash between fashion and cultural values. Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq termed it “outrageous” and “obscene”.
The Chief Minister said appropriate action would be taken after the report is submitted to him within 24 hours. The designer’s representatives did not respond to a request for comment by The Indian Express.
Shivan & Narresh, India’s first luxury holiday brand, was launched in Cannes at ‘Mare di Moda’ with a 100% stitch-free swim line. Known for their bold, confident, and sophisticated aesthetic, the brand has made waves in holiday, resort, and swimwear fashion. Their collections are available in DLF Emporio (Delhi), Kalaghoda (Mumbai), Banjara Hills (Hyderabad), and Embassy Chamber (Bengaluru).
Both designers boast impressive credentials—Shivan holds a Bachelor of Design from NIFT Delhi and a Master’s from Istituto Europeo di Design, while Narresh has a background in Luxury and Marketing from the same institute. Over the years, the brand has been embraced by Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities, including Kim Kardashian, Priyanka Chopra, Sonam Kapoor, and Kangana Ranaut.

Over the years, Shivan & Narresh have cemented their place in the luxury fashion world. But their Gulmarg fashion show puts the spotlight back on the ongoing debate between creative freedom and cultural sensitivity.
