Are you having a monsoon wedding? Count on these tips to choose the right fabric

According to Sheefa Gilani, a celebrity stylist, the first step to decoding monsoon dressing is choosing the right fabric. "Fabrics need to be breathable and should help in avoiding sweat patches. So synthetics are a complete no-no, as are dense fabrics like velvet and raw silk."

In the last couple of weeks, monsoon rains have destroyed the transportation systems and our wedding planning alike. With India receiving 26 per cent more rainfall in July than expected, this was bound to happen. But for those of you who have a stack of shaadi invites on your coffee table, this means nothing positive.

Escaping the gallons of sweat and humidity is highly unlikely in this weather, especially if you are all decked up to go to a wedding function. At moments like these, it is important to have a handy set of tips on how to dress right for a monsoon wedding.

According to Sheefa Gilani, a celebrity stylist, the first step to decoding monsoon dressing is choosing the right fabric. “Fabrics need to be breathable and should help in avoiding sweat patches. So synthetics are a complete no-no, as are dense fabrics like velvet and raw silk.”

As much as avoiding sweat patches might look like the end goal here, it is also important to ensure that the fabrics are moisture-wicking and properly fitted, neither too tight nor too loose, as it may otherwise lead to rashes, fungal infections, or worse, said Shiny Alexander, lecturer, fashion styling and image design, PearlxStudio by Pearl Academy, Bengaluru.

A wedding means a lot of activity and staying in one outfit for a long time, therefore it’s important for one to choose comfortable and breathable fabric to be able to get through the events, while also dancing and socialising at the same time.

Here are some fabrics, which should be your go-to for a monsoon wedding, according to experts.

Alexander cautioned us saying that fabrics like pure chiffon and georgette release creases when exposed to humidity and are best avoided. (Source: Pixabay)

Georgette

Georgette is a sheer, lightweight fabric, perfect for monsoon weddings, according to Gilani. “It also dries quickly and results in wonderful drapes,” she said.

But Alexander cautioned us saying that fabrics like pure chiffon and georgette release creases when exposed to humidity and are best avoided.

Crepe

Alexander advised staying away from high-density fabrics such as silk brocades and velvet.

“Choose light, breathable fabrics such as crepe, which are water sustainable. Such light and breathable fabrics can withstand the humidity during the monsoons,” she added.

Organza

Organza is a great addition to your monsoon wedding wardrobe.

Gilani said that it helps reduce the humidity and keeps your skin breathable, adding a layer of comfort.

Cotton

The ideal fabric to wear in the monsoon season is cotton, according to Gilani, “as it is an excellent material for the humid climate and allows air to flow in and around the skin, creating a cooling effect while keeping you dry.”

But if you want to look more put-together, Alexander suggested going for chanderi or cotton-silk blends.

Here are some other tips for dressing right for a monsoon wedding.

*Opt for bright and vibrant colours. The monsoons are gloomy and you might as well experiment with rich tones.
*Make sure you apply waterproof makeup.
*The humidity and frizz can be a mood killer. Consider opting for hairstyles that keep your hair in an updo or half-tie.
*Opt for the right footwear that gives you a good grip.
*Consider wearing a lightweight shrug, cape, or jacket that can be easily removed if the weather becomes warmer, or vice versa.
*Choose shorter hemlines or tea-length ensembles, which are easier to manage in damp weather and will keep your clothes clean.
