Dr Shriram Nene, who shares inspiring messages for good health and fitness, recently addressed the need to prioritise oneself every morning. “One of the biggest things I find that helps me is taking an hour of power for myself. And in that hour, I reflect on what needs to be done, what my goals are, where am I going…but more importantly, I focus on myself,” Dr Nene said on Instagram.

Just like on a plane, you are told to put oxygen mask on yourself first before anyone else, “a lot of times, people forget that lesson”. “And they are always helping everyone else around them at the expense of themselves. Take that hour every single day and invest in yourself. And then go out and make the world a better place to live in,” added Dr Nene.

Is it that important?

We all know that feeling when we wake up in the morning and don’t feel like getting out of bed or decide to start a new habit: waking up early, eating healthier, moving more — but after a few days, our motivation disappears. Discipline feels hard because we often try to do everything perfectly from day one. “But if we train our brains the right way, discipline to do it every day for yourself becomes easier,” said Saurabh Bothra, founder, Habuild and a certified yoga instructor.

Like any habit, training your brain takes time. “Some days will be easy, some won’t. But with repetition, your brain will start craving the focus, energy, and clarity that discipline brings. Keep going, and soon, what once felt like effort will become second nature,” added Bothra.

If you wake up early and exercise, you’re starting your day with a win! “It will create a positive ripple effect throughout your day, making you more likely to stick to your fitness goals,” continued Bothra.

The quiet, distraction-free time in the early morning allows you to focus and reflect on your other habits.

“Everyone should implement this concept. It will take your personal and professional growth to another level.” Bothra recommended that one “doesn’t necessarily” have to wake up at 4 a.m. “The goal here is to have a quiet time reserved only for yourself. And you need to be serious about using this time for yourself,” said Bothra.
