Brides-to-be, you want to look your absolute best on one of the most special days of your life! Therefore, your pre-wedding glow shouldn’t come with last-minute surprises. Avoid messing up your skin barrier before the big day and let it stay calm, clear, and radiant when it matters most.
Indianexpress.com reached out to dermatologists, and learnt about some of the most common mistakes that brides-to-be tend to make before their big day:
According to Dr Tanushree Biswas, Head Medical Advisor and Consultant, Dermatologist, Kaya Limited, trying out new skincare products or treatments at the last minute can backfire, causing unexpected breakouts, redness, or allergic reactions. It’s safest to stick with a routine your skin already knows and trusts, especially in the last 4-6 weeks before your big day.
Dr Sravya C Tipirneni, consultant dermatologist and cosmetologist at Manipal Hospitals, Bengaluru added, “If you want to try a new treatment to address skin concerns, consult with a skincare specialist who can recommend an appropriate timeline to get the treatment and leave enough time to heal should you have a reaction.”
“While exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, overdoing it can irritate your skin, cause dryness, peeling, and make it more sensitive right before the wedding,” said Dr Biswas. According to her, gentle, routine exfoliation is key, thus avoid aggressive scrubs or peels close to special events.
Dr Biwas believes neglecting sun protection can lead to tanning, new pigmentation, and even unexpected sunburns, no matter the season. “Wearing sunscreen every day, even indoors or during travel, preserves your skin’s even tone for flawless bridal makeup,” she pointed out.
At night, the skin begins the process of regenerating and mending itself. Makeup that is left on the skin interferes with its natural functions, clogs pores, and causes acne and blackheads. Before going to bed, wash and moisturise your face with a natural cleanser to allow it to breathe.
Our hands are not always clean. Touching the face can lead to bacterial infestation on the skin, which can cause acne and pimples. Wash your hands clean before touching. For those with oily skin, touching the face can make your skin more oily.
“Most skincare and hair care products smell amazing. Your skin, unfortunately, does not seem to like them. The fragrance can easily irritate the skin. So, stay away from products with a strong fragrance,” warned Dr Tipirneni.
Stress is a major reason for acne and pimples, said Dr Tipirneni, elaborating that the stressful months leading up to the wedding day can make you break out. “Resist the temptation to pop that zit as it will not only make matters worse. Allow the pimple to heal on its own and try to keep calm,” she recommended.
Skin transformations take time. “Starting your skincare routine just weeks before the wedding may not allow enough time to address deeper concerns, such as pigmentation, acne scars, or uneven tone,” said Dr Tipirneni, adding that consistent care, beginning at least 3-6 months in advance, delivers the best results.
Dr Tipirneni explained that when you sleep, the blood flow to your skin increases, which aids in collagen production and healing damage caused by UV exposure, pollution, dust, grime, and other factors. “Dark circles, puffy eyes, fine lines and wrinkles, and other signs of insufficient sleep are common,” she said.
“Homemade masks and remedies found on the internet may seem harmless, but they can sometimes clog pores or irritate sensitive skin. What works for one person may not suit another. Always consult a professional before trying something new,” suggested Dr Biswas.
